Youth Resiliency Institute Collaborates with Platinum Producer Mighty Mark to Launch Soundtrack for Upcoming Film, "Cherry Hill Charm."

Cherry Hill Charm Soundtrack Poster

The Youth Resiliency Institute & Platinum Producer and DJ Mighty Mark have partnered to release the soundtrack for the upcoming film “Cherry Hill Charm.” The film tells the story of the Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront festival. The festival was co-founded by current Cherry Hill resident, great grandmother, and playwright Mama Shirley Foulks and Youth Resiliency Institute executive director and cultural arts organizer, Fanon Hill. The Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival celebrates the transformative power and healing potential of art and nature and the belief that every child, youth and family should have equitable access to high quality culturally responsive experiences and programming in the arts and ecology. Notably, in 2020, the Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival made history as Baltimore City’s first Arts & Music festival to transition to a virtual platform in response to the pandemic.

The “Cherry Hill Charm” original motion picture soundtrack showcases a blend of original musical compositions and historical audio excerpts. These excerpts include narratives from long-standing elder residents of the Cherry Hill community, offering a unique perspective focused on the heritage of one of America’s most significant Black communities.

The Cherry Hill Heritage Project

The Cherry Hill Heritage Project celebrates the idea that no one is better qualified to chronicle the history of a community than the people who live there.

According to Barbara Samuels, formerly the Managing Attorney of the ACLU of Maryland's Housing program, the history of the development of South Baltimore’s Cherry Hill community is one of the most striking examples of deliberate residential racial segregation in any city.

The Cherry Hill Heritage Project uses a variety of media including film, art, oral history, photography, historical documents and more to document the personal histories of Cherry Hill residents through interviews conducted by youths between the ages of 13 and 18 living in Cherry Hill.

South Baltimore Arts Collective

In South Baltimore, there are some things we just can’t take for granted: like the rhythm of the campana, beat of the nyabinghi drum or chords from the accordion. No matter where we come from, the essence of South Baltimore that breathes cultural knowledge and tradition needs all of us to survive.

Through educational trips and workshops, the South Baltimore Arts Collective fosters equitable access to creative arts-based experiences that connect South Baltimore residents with each other so that they can advocate for diverse programs and activities that are relevant to their communities.
